Privacy preserving data mining from social networks and human mobility
Data analysis and data mining may bring various benefits for understanding our society. At the same time, it may reveal critical information about us, such as our habits, exposing our private characteristics. To motivate the need of privacy enhancing techniques, this seminar will review some past attacks resulting from naive anonymization (of medical records, AOL internet search queries, Netflix movie ratings, and NYC-taxis geo-located data), and present means to prevent attribute and identity disclosure in different contexts such as databases, networks, and geo-located data. In addition, this seminar will explain the trade-offs between the risk of disclosure and utility loss in Open Data, and comment potential strategies based on the legal framework of the recent EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
