Gustavo Yamada, economist within the Top 5% most cited researchers in the world according to RePEc and
recently ratified as member of the Board of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru, has been appointed new Director of Universidad del Pacífico Research Center (CIUP).
Universidad del Pacífico graduate (one of our responsible leaders) and PhD from Columbia University, Yamada has produced sizable academic work on employment economics, education and poverty. He has published more than 80 texts, both at national and international levels, including articles in scientific journals, books, and book chapters.
He created the "Ponte en carrera" Education and Employment Observatory, and is the current president of its advisory board. He was also one of the main driving forces in the CIUP research work that resulted in the implementation of "Crédito 18".
Institutional aim
"Universidad del Pacífico aims to be a quality benchmark in terms of academic production, not only in Peru, but at the regional and global levels." "The CIUP should be a central part of that effort. I hope that we can accelerate this process in the coming years," said our new CIUP Director.
Yamada stands out for his experience in academia, multilateral banks and the public sector, and has held positions of great technical and political responsibility. Currently, he is also member of the National Council of Education of Peru and Fellow researcher at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Bonn, Germany.
In addition, he has been Dean of the School of Economics and Finance at Universidad del Pacífico, vice-minister of Social Promotion, senior economist at the Inter-American Development Bank and Fiscal Economist at the International Monetary Fund.
Special recognition
We are deeply grateful to Elsa Galarza Contreras, who until July this year served as Director, for her important contributions to the management of our center. We are proud that as Minister of the Environment-and still our researcher- she continues and extends her invaluable contribution to the country.
