January 13 , 2017

The General Directors of ILAS-CASS and IPLE-CASS, Professor Wu Baiyi and Professor Zhang Juwei respectively, and the Executive Director of the Center for Brazilian Studies of ILAS-CASS, Professor Zhou Zhiwei, were received by the President of Universidad del Pacífico, Dr. Elsa Del Castillo, and the Director of the Center for Peru-China Studies, Dr. Rosario Santa Gadea, for a working meeting aimed at discussing possibilities of cooperation between the Chinese institutions and Universidad del Pacífico.

The efforts to approach Chinese institutions that the Center for Peru-China Studies has been making have led some of these institutions to include Universidad del Pacífico in their travels to Latin America. In this context, in November 2016 the Center was visited by the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS) and the Institute of Population and Labor Economics (IPLE), both from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and the Center for China-Latin America Management Studies of Tshingua University.

The meeting was preceded by another meeting of the Chinese visitors with Dr. Santa Gadea and the Director of the UP Research Center (CIUP), Dr. Gustavo Yamada, with the purpose of exploring possibilities of developing joint research works.

In addition, the Center for Peru-China Studies supported the workshop "Diversity of Latin American and Chinese Cultures and Mutual Cultural Learning", co-organized by ILAS-CASS and IPLE-CASS together with Centro Bartolomé de las Casas (CBC) and held in Cusco on November 10. The workshop was run after a series of academic activities that the Chinese colleagues held in Lima. Its aim was to allow the exchange of knowledge and perspectives on China and Peru in key aspects of the bilateral relationship, such as the economy and culture, especially of the indigenous and peasant population of the interior regions of Peru.

The workshop was attended by the Directors of the Chinese institutions, the Director of the Center for Peru-China Studies and local experts from Centro Bartolomé de las Casas, its Director General, Prof. Valerio Paucarmayta; Members of the Board of Directors, Mourik Bueno de Mesquita and Silvio Campana; researcher, Cesar del Pozo; and International Development Professional, Eva Becker.

On the other hand, the Executive Director of the Center for China-Latin America Management Studies of Tshingua University, Dr. Chen Taotao, also visited Universidad del Pacífico and was received by the Vice President for Research, Dr. Cynthia Sanborn, for a meeting. The Center for Peru-China Studies organized a working lunch that brought together the Chinese expert and the following UP academics: the Director of the Center; the Director of CIUP; Professor Vicente Leon, Vice Dean of Finance; and Alejandro Flores, main professor at the Academic Department of Management. The purpose of this visit was also to explore possibilities for developing joint projects in the near future, as well as to discuss academic issues of common interest. In this regard, Dr. Chen was also received by the Director of the Center for Mining and Sustainability Studies, Dr. Carlos Casas, and by the Vice Dean of Finance for bilateral meetings.

In addition to the visits made by the Director of the Center to the institutions mentioned above during her academic missions to China in 2015 and 2016, the Center also co-organized together with ILAS-CASS the workshop "Industrial cooperation and the bi-oceanic railway corridor project: Peru-China informal dialog", conducted at UP in December 2015. This academic activity had the illustrious presence of the Chinese ambassador to Peru and brought together academics from both institutions to discuss the issues concerned.

These visits help to deepen academic cooperation ties between Universidad del Pacífico and prestigious Chinese academic institutions. In this way, the Center for Peru-China Studies will maintain contact with these institutions in order to follow up on the ideas launched so that in the near future other joint academic activities will take place.
